Outcrop Patterns of Simple Folds

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences,University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

5.9 Outcrop Patterns - Simple Folds Folds that are large compared to topographic relief usually maintain their distinctive patterns on geologic maps, but folds that are small compared to topographic relief may have very complex outcrop patterns. In extreme cases the folds may not be recognizable at first without some sort of geometrical analysis. The procedure for analyzing simple structures is to treat small portions of the fold as plane segments A small anticline with strike and dip data. Local structure contours drawn and outcrop pattern constructed.
